Connecting to the RPI3 via PuTTY
In the previous post Raspberry Pi 3 Get up and running - Initial setup we obtained our IP address of the Raspberry Pi 3 we are using by using the command below in the terminalhostname -I
which returned the IP address on my network of 192.168.0.10. We also found out which port we should connect to using this IP address, which is port 22 the default for SSH.
I have since turned my Raspberry Pi off and on again and my home router has given my Raspberry Pi a new IP address. The IP for my Raspberry Pi is now 192.168.0.11, which I found out by running the command above.
With this information and using a small program on Windows we are going to remotely connect in this post to our Raspberry Pi 3!
Download PuTTY
First of all we need to down the program PuTTY which can be found here, this requires no installation. Double click on putty.exe that you have just downloaded and you will be presented with this window below.Connect via PuTTY
If we enter the address of the Raspberry Pi in to the hostname and then click open putty will attempt to connect to our Raspberry Pi.
We will then receive this warning shown below, just click yes to say you trust the machine you are connecting to.
This will connect to the Raspberry Pi and you will be presented with the login screen.
If you are following along with these guides then the only users avaliable on your Raspberry Pi are "pi" and "root". We set the password for both in the previous guide. If you have not set your password then the default user name and password is user: pi and password: raspberry
Log in using your details and you will be presented with a fully capable terminal.
This is the perfect place from which to start the next post, basic terminal commands and usage.
