Connecting to Raspberry Pi 3 desktop GUI From a Windows machine

We have seen how to connect via SSH, but what about if you want to connect to the Raspberry Pi from a different device and use the Desktop Graphical User Interface?

This is a really easy one to set up! We will be able to control the Raspberry Pi 3`s desktop from a different device, no need for a monitor or display device to fully use the Raspberry Pi 3 any more.

We can SSH in to the terminal with ease now, and after this if there is a task we want to use the desktop graphical user interface on the Raspberry Pi 3 for we can!

Installation

First type in to your terminal

sudo apt-get install tightvncserver

You will be asked to verify you want to use up the storage space required to install, press y to accept.

We are then asked to verify installation of a package that cannot be verified, press y to accept this.

Tight VNC Server will then install.

Start Server

In the terminal type
tightvncserver

You will be asked to choose a password, this is the password you will enter when connecting from a different device.

Confirm your password.

Your choice here, do you want to create a view only password or not? I have chosen to do this by pressing y and enter.

If like me you chose to create a view only password then you will be asked to confirm your password.

There we go your desktop instance is running, note the number on the line that says
New 'X' desktop is raspberrypi:1

So our desktop is running on raspberrypi:1, this is your IP address, followed by the last part of the port we will connect to.

I am using default settings so to connect to this desktop instance I would need to connect to raspberrypi:1, which would in my case look like this 192.168.0.11:1.

Connecting via Windows

To connect via Windows is really very easy. We need to download one small program, run it and enter the details we got above. We are going to use VNC viewer to connect, its small and requires no installation. To connect via an Android device instead click here

Download VNC viewer from here, choose the Windows version that is right for your system.
In my case the 64 bit version (if you not sure which to get, navigate to Control Panel\System and Security\System on your Windows system and you should see the system type.

It will be either 32 bit or 64 bit, make your download choice the same. If that doesn't work for you and your really not sure, just to be safe download the 32 bit version which will work on both 32 bit and 64 bit systems.

Once your download is complete open VNC viewer and you will be presented with something similar to below.

Agree to the terms and conditions and click OK and VNC viewer will open.

Enter the Raspberry Pi 3`s IP address followed by :1 or what ever number you were given in the steps above.

You may see a warning pop up, just click continue.

Enter the password you choose for your connection when you started Tight VNC server on your Raspberry Pi 3.

That is it! You should now see your Raspberry Pi 3`s desktop!

There are many different settings available to configure Tight VNC server, to see some options avaliable type in to the terminal on the Raspberry Pi 3
tightvncserver --help
